Bernard Levin talks to V. S. Pritchett. X' No one has been able to pin him down because he has done so many things well. It is very unusual to be a brilliant critic and to write fiction brilliantly.'
(PAUL THEROUX)
Although over 80, Pritchett still works from 9.0 to 5.0 every day of the week, lest he should forget how to write, preferring the ' darting glance' of the short story to the novel which he feels has to tell the reader everything. Pritchett has also written two brilliant autobiographies, A Cab at the Door and Midnight Oil.

... of documentary How Do I Look?
Sandra, Jane and Gaynor have a problem. Fat. Not the sort of fat that a diet charms away, but intractable wedges and folds of flabbiness that are made of sterner stuff. So perhaps Jane's desire for cream buns can only be made to wilt by the hypnotist's siren voice. If Sandra's hips and bottom refuse to conform, perhaps the answer will have to be the surgeon. And Gaynor-happy and homely at 20 stones - at last yields to society's pressure for the hour-glass figure and consents to the final solution, having her jaws wired together.

A play without words. Quad has a musical structure. It is a kind of canon or catch-a mysterious square-dance. Four hooded figures move along the sides of the square. Each has his own particular itinerary. A pattern emerges and collisions are just avoided. From these permutations, Beckett, as writer and director creates an image of life that is both highly charged and strangely funny. Introduced by Martin Esslin
