A series of personal views from the Third World
A Sense of Honour
This week Third Eye examines the dilemma of Arab and Islamic women, caught between the rigid traditions of a tribal society and the stresses of the modern world.
Dr Nadia Atif , a 37-year-old Egyptian anthropologist, explores Islam's unique sense of honour through Egypt's tribal Bedouin, Pharaonic village customs and modem Cairo. She explains the revival of Islamic fundamentalism and looks at the Saudi situation where oil money has changed the sexual mores. She believes that, in spite of the glaring contradictions, there Is an honourable path to be found through the sexual and cultural minefield.
