A Wildlife Exploration of the Andes
A three-part special presentation by The World About Us

Imagine a range of mountains stretching from Scotland to southern Africa without a break, far higher than any others in the tropics, and still an unknown world. That is the size of the Andes.
This condor's-eye view reveals a landscape of stunning beauty and contrast, from the remote tempestuous shores of Cape Horn, and the glaciers of Tierra del Fuego - the land of fire - past the wind-lashed forests and peaks of Patagonia to a land of 2,000 volcanoes. No less remarkable are the animals, because for 70 million years South America was cut off from the rest of the world. Guanaco and rhea, dwarf deer and humming-bird, penguin and puma: their lives are shaped by their magnificent surroundings.
