Painting by Numbers
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly between the skyscrapers of a city centre? ... to take a trip through Saturn's rings? ... or walk around inside a molecule of DNA? Well, with ' computer graphics' you can ... For the artist it's a new way to paint; for the scientist to understand data; and for anyone to play more elaborate space-invaders style games, or to control dangerous or impossible events ... The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for Young People
A series of six lectures on the theme of measurement given by Professor R.V. Jones, F.R.S.
Measurement enables us to express our observation of objects in precise terms by converting into numbers. Using these numbers, be they inches, feet or millimetres, it is possible to duplicate exactly something we have measured in another place at another time. Without this capability our modern, industrial society could not have evolved.

The Long Exile
Alter more than 40 years exile in America, Picasso's monumental painting Guernica finally arrived this September at the Prado Museum, Madrid. The great Spanish painter insisted it should return only when democracy was restored to his homeland. The picture was inspired by the devastation of a small Basque town called Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. We talk to survivors of that terrible day in 1937; we hear of the cliff-hanger negotiations to bring the painting back home and we look in detail at this puzzling and powerful masterpiece.
