Massive earthquake rocks Southern Italy; Over 3,000 feared dead; Over 300,000 homeless
Last November's headlines now cold in the wake of current events. Today, six months later, the mountains around the little town of Brienza echo to the sounds of Scouse voices - the lads from Skelmersdale are here.
'Grazie, I thank you, all together now - Grazie '. That's become the catch-phrase of the group of young, unemployed building workers who've volunteered to help with demolition and reconstruction in the earthquake zone.
'... There's a companionship when you go to Brienza-it's like helping your next-door-neighbour and what the hell, we're only sat on our backsides in Skem doing nothing.' The words of Ray Buck , unemployed, just back from his third trip to Southern Italy.

Bernard Levin talks to the philosopher Sir Isaiah Berlin who has been described as ' one of the diamond minds of our generation'. Berlin abandoned pure philosophy after the last war in favour of the history of ideas, on the grounds that he preferred ' a field in which one could hope to know more at the end of one's life than when one had begun '.

In May 1941 Hitler ordered an airborne invasion of Crete, unaware of the number of British and ANZAC troops on the island. German paratroopers were strenuously drilled for their new style of warfare-and then dropped without their guns. The result was some of the bitterest hand-to-hand fighting in the Second World War. This film, made for New Zealand television, retraces the course of the battle with eye-witness accounts from both sides. Although they were defeated, the men of Crete have maintained a warm regard for the men who fought on their side.
