Bertrand is obsessed by women generally and by their legs in particular. Capable of following a complete stranger for miles, he feels that each woman is unique, a promise of pleasure not to be missed. Eventually, his obsession leads him to an early grave but not before he has loved a great many women-and recorded it all in a book.
