The last of a three-part profile

In the aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War Moshe Dayan, Israel's Minister of Defence, was cleared of negligence in his preparations for war - but his reputation for infallibility was in pieces. In the years which followed he began to examine his relationships with the Arabs and to reassess Jewish attitudes to them since the first settlers arrived in Palestine 100 years before. With those thoughts came a realisation that, although he has spent his whole life fighting the Arabs, the land he has been defending is no more Jewish than Arab and that it ought to be possible to find a solution by which both Arab and Jew can live together in peace in the ancient land of the Bible.
