Each year, on Shakespeare's birthday, the streets of Stratford-upon-Avon are thronged with ambassadors, actors, civic dignitaries, tourists and townsfolk, all there to celebrate the birth of William Shakespeare with a day of pageant and processions.
The story of this 24 hours in the life of Stratford is told in tonight's documentary, filmed around the clock during last year's celebrations to mark the 415th anniversary of the birth of England's most famous poet and playwright. Film editor MICHAEL MULLINER Producer BRIAN STRACHAN

The killer amoeba discovered in Bath's famous hot springs led to a death which stopped the use of the spa waters in 1978. This tragedy gave Professor Barry Cunliffe a rare chance to excavate. The waters were drained and the century old concrete floor of the King's bath removed to reveal Roman remains embedded in 2,000 years of undisturbed mud.
Conditions were difficult. Excavators were forced to wear protective clothing against amoebic infection. But the dig was to throw new light on how the Romans used the hot springs and, more surprisingly, was of enormous importance to today's engineers, who, before the waters can be restored, face the same structural problems as the Romans faced.
