The Corncrake and the Croft
To the birdwatcher, the Outer Hebrides are renowned as a place to see the rare corncrake or the black-throated diver ... To the more casual visitor they're a place of wild beauty and savage weather. But to the crofters they are a tough home from which to harvest a living through basic agriculture and fishing.
The irony of the place is that, although the crofters are almost unaware of their unusual bird neighbours, their small fields and ancient techniques preserve the habitat on which the birds depend.
... an absolute beauty, a celebratory collage of the people, creatures, landscape and elements * . s (THE OBSERVER)
