Margrethe, Queen of Denmark, is, at 34, the youngest reigning Queen. She is a great-great-grand-daughter of Queen Victoria and a cousin of our present Queen. The Danish Monarchy is the oldest in Europe and probably the oldest in the world, going back 1,000 years to Viking times. This week the Queen and her husband Prince Henrik are making a State Visit to Britain.
Queen Margrethe has attended five universities, was at Girton College, Cambridge, and the London School of Economics, speaks perfect English and has been on the throne of Denmark for just over two years. She is married to a Frenchman and is the mother of two young sons.
This film profile shows the Queen and her family both in their formal role and informally at home in their Palaces. For the first time on television a reigning Queen talks about her education for monarchy, her personal interests, her role as Monarch in the 20th century and the relationship in a modern society between Queen and people.
