Unique close-up encounters with whales in their breeding grounds off the Argentine coast: meeting a 60-foot whale underwater face to face sounds like a frightening assignment, yet this is what Krov and Ann Menuhin undertook to do for their first film.
It was part of an eight-month visit to the Valdes Peninsula to film a unique concentration of breeding sea-lions, elephant seals, whales, penguins and other sea-birds. The Menuhins had many adventures but none more exciting than with the Southern Right Whales.
' I must say that for the first 15 or 20 minutes that I was in the water with them I don' think I was scared as much as just awed ... it's like seeing a submarine underwater for the first time -it's an immense thing ....... ' I think it was also this sense of newness-of actually doing something that very few people, if any, have done before; and here we were actually in the water with 65 or 70 tons of whale playing and sharing a few moments of time which certainly can never be replaced.'
