The French painter Paul Gauguin was forty-three when he abandoned his wife and five children to go and live in Tahiti. He had already thrown up a well-paid job on the Stock Exchange so that he could give all his energies to painting. The South Seas, he hoped, would be less stifling than Europe and less hostile to the work of his imagination.
But the years Gauguin spent in Tahiti were the source of intense disillusionment and sadness. They were also his most creative years. Gauguin in Tahiti examines this irony.
Michael Redgrave reads excerpts from Gauguin's letters and diaries.
