Achievement... Happiness... Tragedy... Stress...
A weekly programme which focuses on people and the situations which shape their lives
Reporters: Jim Douglas Henry, Angela Huth, Jeremy James, John Percival, Trevor Philpott, Desmond Wilcox, Harold Williamson

This week: Nuns in Conflict
When the Mother Superior of a convent of 540 Hollywood, California, nuns asks: 'Are we a relic of medieval times?' and encourages her sisters to wear modern clothes, give up community prayer, go out alone and return when they wish, people begin to question the role of a nun in 1968. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary have voted themselves into the twentieth century with a vengeance and brought down upon their once-shaven heads the wrath of their Cardinal and much of the Roman Catholic Establishment. Will they be allowed to remain in the Church? Or will their critics drive them into the wilderness?

A French film with English sub-titles.
Starring Channing Pollock as Judex

In pre-1914 France audiences were kept on the edge of their seats by the daring exploits of Louis Feuillade's Avenger-type hero, Judex. Nearly half a century later Georges Franju lovingly reconstructed the adventures of the cloaked hero, his beloved, and the evil femme fatale who crosses their path.
The film is a brilliant pastiche with contemporaneous Parisian art nouveau settings; it is amusing yet gripping, and the American prestidigitator Channing Pollock as the unbelievably handsome Judex moves through the film with perfect dream-like panache.
