In 1949 Rorem settled in France and within a month was speaking the language fluently. Donald Macleod talks to him about his years in the country that had an overwhelming impact on him, both personally and artistically. The music includes two new recordings from the BBC Concert Orchestra that shed new light on this period of Rorem's life.

Sarah Walker introduces the fifth concert in Portuguese pianist Artur Pizarro's cycle of the complete Beethoven sonatas. Tonight, a work commemorating the departure from Vienna in 1809 of Beethoven's great friend the Archduke Rudolph, alongside one of the composer's own favourite sonatas.
