5: The Birds
Donald Macleod is joined by pianist Peter Hill and musicologist Nigel Simeone to look at Messiaen's obsession with birdsong and the effect this had on his music. They also discuss the only opera he wrote, which, aptly, took the story of St Francis of Assisi as its subject. It took many years to complete (1975-1983) and can be viewed as a summation of the composer's career.
