3: In the Wars. In 1940, Messiaen was captured and taken to the prisoner-of-war camp at Gorl itz. It was here that he wrote the bulk of his famous war piece, the Quartet forthe End of Time, and where its premiere took place, performed with fellow inmates. After his release in 1941, Messiaen returned to the subversive musical life of Nazi-occupied Paris. There he taught at the Conservatoire and began work on a treatise outlining his compositional methods. Presented by Donald Macleod.

Chopin may have made the nocturne famous, but he got the idea from the Irish composer John Field. Today's programme features music by both of them, together with lonesome American nightscapes from Kurt Weill and Aaron Copland, luscious nocturnal sounds from Delius and Bartok, and one of the most sensual and exotic night pieces ever written:
Szymanowski's Symphony No 3 (Song of the Night).
