The first of a new monthly series that explores 20th-century orchestral masterpieces from the inside. Jocelyn Pook introduces Stravinsky's Apollo.
Composed in 1928 and revised in 1947, this ballet score, his first collaboration with the choreographer
Georges Balanchine , reveals Stravinsky in his most refined neoclassical manner. Today's programme begins with a documentary feature tracing the origins of the piece in a commission for the Library of Congress and assesses the impact of the work and its enduring significance in the cultural landscape. With contributions from choreographer Nanette Glushak , writers Stephen Walsh and Robynn Stilwell , pianist Christopher O'Riley and dancer Thomas Edur , and archive recordings of Stravinsky and Balanchine.
