5.00-12.00 BARCELONA NIGHTS
BBC Radio 3 launches a four-day weekend of live concerts, opera, features and snapshots from the Catalan capital, sampling as much of the life there as it is possible to capture in four Barcelona Nights. Not only is the city designated as European City of Culture for the millennium, it has just opened two important new arts venues, the Auditori concert halls and the Liceu opera house - reconstructed after the devastating fire of 1994.
Sean Rafferty Iights the touch paper on the weekend's events with a special edition featuring a bright mix of music and interviews from some of Barcelona's most important voices, including Montserrat Caballe, Victoria de los Angeles and Jose Carreras. Music includes Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole played by the Suisse Romade Orchestra, conductor Ernest Ansermet, and performances by Pablo Casals, Alicia de Larrocha and the early music group Hesperion XX, directed by Jordi Savall .
Stephanie Hughes introduces a concert of Catalan music from the Renaissance to the Baroque arranged for Radio 3 by Jordi Savall and performed by La Capella Reial de Catalunya in the magnificent setting of Barcelona's 15th-century cathedral.
Part 1: From the Conquest of Naples to the Death of Philip II. Instrumental and vocal pieces from the Montecassino Songbook (1450-99), songs and fantasias from
Valencia and Barcelona (1500-50) and Catalan madrigals and dances from the late 16th century.
8.15 Twenty Minutes: Adventure and Acquisition During the interval, Stephanie Hughestakes a tour of the cathedral and talks to music historians Tess Knighton and Juan Jose Carreras about the sometimes turbulent background to the works in tonight's programme.
8.35 Part 2: From Philip /// to the Reapers' Revolution and the War of Succession
Songs of heroes and the music of battle as well as spiritual works reflecting the long period of strife and austerity which bedevilled Catalan life in the 17th century.
How did a drab city, once described as "the colour of a dog running away", become the peacock of postmodern designer-led chic? Paul Allen and guests investigate the roots of Barcelona's cultural, artistic and architectural rebirth, taking in not only the more familiar figures of Gaudi and Miro but also those local heroes unknown abroad.
Verity Sharp reports on the new music scene in Barcelona, talks to local composers, previews new multimedia show Sonic Damage by Orquestra del Caos and introduces highlights from a recent performance of new Spanish music by the ensemble Barcelona 216.
