American soprano Jessye Norman has become widely admired as an interpreter of French repertoire.
Today she talks about her links with France, which include being a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, having an orchid named after her by the Natural History
Museum in Paris and singing the Marseillaise at the bicentenary celebrations of the French Revolution.

Henry Clay Frick became one of America's richest men, even by that country's elevated standards, making his fortune in coal, steel and railways. As a child he had been sickly and his health remained poor. Tragically his only child died after swallowing a pin. But despite frequent business catastrophes his wealth grew, and today the magnificent Frick Collection in New York City remains an oasis of peace and calm reflection. Music includes:

Jacob Bronowski's television series The Ascent of Man lends this year's Proms its main theme. In Bronowski's words the series was "a philosophy of nature", in which he not only traced man's development as a species but also affirmed his belief in humanity.
