BBC Proms 99

on BBC Radio 3

Berlioz's ebullient overture raises the curtain for the dazzling virtuosity of a concerto by Chopin and the impassioned Romanticism of the unique symphony by Franck. The orchestra also plays a 70th birthday tribute to its compatriot, the composer Alun Hoddinot.

8.15 The Ascent of Man
Jacob Bronowski's television series The Ascent of Man lends this year's Proms its main theme. In Bronowski's words the series was "a philosophy of nature", in which he not only traced man's development as a species but also affirmed his belief in humanity. This programme, the second of four, focuses on the man and his thoughts.
