5: William Burrell
Sir William Burrell made his fortune by his boldness as a shipowner, building new vessels when recession seemed to indicate retrenchment.
The same skills that aided him in business were applied to obtaining the art treasures he sought for his sumptuous collection - with a strong preference for the medieval and the Oriental. His will laid down precise details for the building of a new gallery in Glasgow, and the result was hailed as a triumph. Today the Burrell Collection is one of Scotland's showpieces. Music includes:

A new symphony by the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, the result of a major Proms commission, receives its first performance tonight. Vasks observes that "beauty and harmony are perhaps rare in life, but in music they are possible" - a sentiment echoed in a concerto and a symphony by two masters of Romantic melody - Tchaikovsky and Dvorak.

Founded by Peter Gabriel in the eighties, Womad (World of Music and Dance) celebrates its tenth year at
Reading's Rivermead site. Highlights include La Bottine Souriante from
Quebec; the Jamaican jazz guitar of Ernest Ranglin ; gospel music from the Blind Boys of Alabama; Sufi music with Rizwan Qawwali ; Cuban son from
Colombian singer Toto La Momposina; and Afro-soul from Nigeria's Femi Kuti. The festival also plays host to the BBC Concert Orchestra performing a shakuhachi concerto with Japanese musician Joji Hirota. Lucy Duran and Andrew McGregor introduce the best of the music, meet the musicians and visit the workshops.
