Five Great Collectors
With Donald Macleod.
3: Henry Clay Frick
Henry Clay Frick became one of America's richest men, even by that country's elevated standards, making his fortune in coal, steel and railways. As a child he had been sickly and his health remained poor. Tragically his only child died after swallowing a pin. But despite frequent business catastrophes his wealth grew, and today the magnificent Frick Collection in New York City remains an oasis of peace and calm reflection. Music includes:
Wagner Pilgrims' Chorus
(Tannhauser) Vienna State Opera and Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic
Orchestra, conductor Georg Solti
Saint-Saens Softly Awakes My Heart (Samson et Dalila)
Marion Anderson (contralto)
Orchestra conducted by Lawrence Collingwood
Saint-Saens Prelude: The Deluge
Gerard Jarry (violin), Orchestra of the lie de France, conductor Jacques Mercier
Ives The Anti-abolitionist Riots
(Studies for Piano)
Joanna MacGregor (piano)
Walton Cantico del Sole Finzi
Singers, conductor Paul Spicer
Plus pieces played on the house organ of the Frick Collection.
