Pat Metheny is not only a very popular guitarist, he is also one of the great improvisers in jazz and a prolific composer. In this five-part series, he talks to Ian Carr about his career, recalling first his upbringing in America around Kansas City.
Friendship with Jaco Pastorius led to their playing with pianist Paul Bley , but Metheny's big break came when vibraphonist Gary Burton decided to turn his quartet into a quintet by including him.

Glyndeboume Festival Opera's latest Handel production, conducted by William Christie , the Baroque specialist who had such a hit with Handel's Theodora in 1996. INVENTING AMERICA

Tonight's programme includes New York Is Now by the Renee Rosnes Quartet, recorded live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall earlier this year.
Rosnes, a young Canadian pianist, is a dynamic and sensitive player who has established herself as a performer, composer and arranger of note. Her quartet tonight includes bassist Peter Washington , drummer Billy Drummond and saxophonist David Sanchez. The programme also explores the work of avant-garde/free jazz pianist Matthew Shipp, who opened the Rosnes concert. And Dutch drummer Han Bennink remembers working with flautist and reeds man Eric Dolphy, born 70 years ago this week.
