The Music of Benjamin Frankel
Frankel is perhaps best known as one of Britain's leading composers of film music, but later in his career he turned to composing for the concert hall, with as many as eight symphonies to his credit. To mark the 25th anniversary of the composer's death, Chris de Souza recalls Frankel's career, with excerpts from some of the film scores, the Serenata Concertante for piano trio and orchestra, chamber works, and Frankel himself conducting one of his own symphonies. Tommy Pearson ends his look at unusual voices with a whistle-stop tour of some of the more extraordinary vocalists who have left recordings for posterity.
Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim and Teresa Berganza are just some of the musical stars performing together at the Barbican on Sunday in a tribute concert for the late Peter Diamond. Humphrey Carpenter finds out more about this outstanding manager, promoter and director. He also blows the cobwebs off the harmonium with poet and humorist Ivor Cutler.
