Michael Berkeley's guest this week is poet and journalist Blake Morrison, whose delving into the darker side of human nature recently produced As If, his acclaimed book on the infamous murder of toddler James Bulger. Morrison recently collaborated with composer Gavin Bryars on the opera Dr Ox's Experiment - which will be broadcast this Wednesday - and has provided a new translation for a staged version of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Both composers feature in his choice of music, together with a variety of works, from Schubert to Stevie Wonder.

Continuing the American season, Jazz on 3 presents a concert by drummer Paul Motian 's trio, featuring Bill Frisell on guitar and Joe Lovano on saxophone, recorded at London's Barbican Centre earlier this year.
Motian began his career in mid-fifties New York and played extensively with Bill Evans and Paul Bley in the late fifties and early sixties. Frequently associated with bassist Charlie
Haden and pianist Keith Jarrett , he has led his own groups since 1977. Also tonight, writer and photographer Val Wilmer remembers the important musicians among the passengers on the Empire Windrush 50 years ago.
