From Johannesburg. Now that apartheid is over, how is the South African musical scene changing? What are the new songs of the townships, and can those bastions of white music - the orchestras and opera houses - survive? Ivan Hewett debates these issues with leading figures on the South African music scene, including a government minister for the arts. With contributions from Hugh Masekela , Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the Soweto Quartet, and live music from the SDASA Chorale.

Harpsichordist Davitt Moroney talks to George Pratt about the rise of Louis and Francois Couperin from their provincial origins to the favoured circle of Louis XIV, and he gives the first broadcast of works by their more obscure relation Marc Roger Normand. By James Agee and Walker Evans , dramatised for radio by Stanley Richardson.
