Britten the Performer
The composer Benjamin Britten was also a distinguished interpreter on the podium and at the keyboard, in the opera pit and the concert hall. In the second of three programmes exploring the rich legacy of recordings which Benjamin Britten made for the BBC, musicians who worked closely with him discuss his work as a conductor. As well as music by Mozart and Britten himself, the programme features a live recording of Tchalkovsky's
Serenade for Strings from the 1968 Aldeburgh Festival. The performance was described by The Times as "visionary and musicianly in detail, emotionally high-powered, marvellous in invention, and at a temperature and with a sympathy that few conductors, even Russians, manage or are indeed minded to achieve", and it testifies to Britten's commitment to the music of composers he admired. Producer Peter Thresh
