Michael Berkeley is joined this week by Malcolm Bradbury , whose novel of sixties academic life, The History Man, catapulted him to fame, and whose creative-writing course at the University of East Anglia fostered the talents of Ian McEwan and Kazuo
Ishiguro, among many others.

This new production of Gluck's heroic drama opened the season at La Scala, Milan, earlier this evening. The story of the sorceress Armida and the crusader knight Rinaldo was one of the most frequently used by operatic composers. Gluck's version of 1777 was the fifth of the seven operas he composed for Paris, and was set to a libretto by Philippe Quinault , first used by Lully over 90 years earlier. Although the opera has become a rarity, it was admired by Meyerbeer and Berlioz, and Wagner and Toscanini both conducted it.
Chorus and Orchestra of La Scala, Milan, conductor Riccardo Muti
Acts 1, 2 and 3 7.55 Gluck's Armide takes its story from Torquato Tasso's monumental poem Gerusalemme Liberata of 1581. Tim Carter discusses the mixture of fact and fiction in Tasso's epic of the First Crusade, and its influence on opera composers from Monteverdi to Dvorak.
