A feature of the Lullian opera is the sommeil scene, in which the hero is magically charmed to sleep and given pleasant or unpleasant dreams by a supernatural figure who has designs on him. The programme includes sommeils from Atys and Armide and, between them, lullabies, nocturnes and aubades from Les Amants

Recorded last year following a stage production at the Gbttingen Handel Festival, this is the latest issue in Nicholas McGegan 's series of Handel operas on CD. Ariodante is betrothed to Ginevra, the daughter of the king of Scotland, but Polinesso is a rival for her love. Double-dealing and murder ensue. Sung in Italian.
