Music for the Stage - 1650s-1680s For his last 14 years, Lully was primarily a composer of operas for
Paris and Versailles; but before that, he had spent two decades writing numbers for other types of musical show. The programmes of stage music which Roger Savage introduces this week strike a balance between these two phases of his career.
1: Courtly Ballet and Comedy Ballet Exploring Lully's links with Louis XIV and the ballets staged at court, his links with the playwright MoliSre, and the ballet sequences he wrote for
Moliere's comedies. The programme includes excerpts from the Ballet de Flore, Les Noces de Village, psyché, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme and George Dandin , and the performers include Les Musiciens du Louvre directed by Marc Minkowski , Capriccio Stravagante directed by Skip Sempe , and the London Oboe Band.
