The first of two programmes featuring Ravel's two sharply contrasted piano concertos, the sunny, jazzy G major and, today, the sombre, brooding lefthand concerto, with a concluding cadenza that provides a remarkable bravura display for the one-handed soloist. Also today, one of Ravel's virtuoso Spanish inspirations, here in the composer's orchestration and, this evening, in an unusual authentic performance of the original piano version.
