2: Confronting the Classics
For many composers, the immense shadow of Beethoven has been an object of dread. "You have no idea how difficult it is with such a giant marching behind you," wrote Brahms. Stephen Johnson introduces Robert Simpson 's most outwardly classical symphony, which boldly confronts Beethoven and in doing so enters new musical realms. The programme also includes a tiny tone-poem about the life of a mosquito.
