Berthold Goldschmidt (1903-96) Bernard Keeffe explores the life of the late composer and conductor Berthold Goldschmidt. A pupil of Franz Schreker in the Berlin Hochschule of the twenties,
Goldschmidt was one of the last in a distinguished line of German composer/conductors. This tribute charts the course of a career which took Goldschmidt from his days as a repetiteur to his lucky escape from Nazi Germany and his struggles to gain recognition for his compositions from the British establishment.
Known in Britain as a conductor, notably for his performances with the BBC orchestras, he lived to see a resurgence of interest in his music over the last decade. As he remarked with good humour, "I'm glad old hats have come into fashion." The programme includes unbroadcast interviews with the composer, plus recordings from the BBC and the Berlin Philharmonic and radio archives.

Stephen Pratt introduces the last edition from this year's Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
The main work is the British premiere of Stockhausen's Libra, a theatre piece for bass clarinet and electronics. Suzanne Stephens plays the clarinet while the composer controls the electronic sound projection. The Ives Ensemble from the Netherlands mark their British debut with the world premiere of Gerald Barry 's Piano Quartet No 2 and with Christopher Fox 's Theme and Variations, which lasts 45 minutes and contains, as the composer says, "everything I know how to do".
