As part of the celebrations of Hans Werner Henze 's 70th birthday, Radio 3 presents another chance to hear his operatic black comedy to a text by Edward Bond. The English Cat is a sharp satire on the hypocrisy of the British establishment. Minette - the cat from the country - and her streetwise admirer Tom pit their wits against endless bureaucats and aristocats, led by Minette's haughty beau, Lord Puff. This 1986 BBC studio recording of the work's first British performance is introduced by Peter Paul Nash.
