Roderick Swanston asks six leading performers of early music to reveal the personal element in their music-making.

Like Alfred Deller before her, Emma Kirkby has come to be the most famous voice of early music. She says that "human-sized voices" like hers are more natural than those of today's opera stars - and feels lucky that somebody was in search of her sound when she was still a teacher and part-time choral singer. The programme includes excerpts from sacred music by Byrd, Taverner, Couperin and Monteverdi; secular songs by Dufay, Sermisy, Ward, Schutz, Dowland, Lawes and Blow; and dramatic music by Purcell and Handel.

Continuing the six-part series of masterclasses. The third programme comes from the Royal College of Music in London, where a chamber choir of college students and their student conductor Kevin Beckett meet to discuss the finer points of choral-singing interpretation and technique with the eminent conductor Paul
Spicer. As well as directing the highly regarded Finzi Singers, Spicer is also a composer, and was a composition pupil of Herbert Howells at the Royal College in the 1970s. It is particularly appropriate therefore that they are working together on Howells' unaccompanied motet Take him, earth, for cherishing. Producer Steve Portnoi

David Pyatt (horn), BBC Philharmonic. conductor Martyn Brabbins
Sarah Walker introduces the work of three young composers from the final concert of this year's Young Musician of the Year composers' workshop. The BBC Philharmonic spent a week in February preparing 12 new pieces of chamber and orchestral music selected from over a hundred entries, working closely throughout with the composers and their workshop leaders. The workshop culminated in two concerts conducted by Martyn Brabbins. Today's programme features a previous Young Musician of the Year winner, David Pyatt , in Tansy Davies 's demanding Horn Concerto, framed by two works that take their inspiration from turbulent periods in Scottish history.
Stephen Maniam The Seven Men of Moidart
Tansy Davies Concerto for horn and chamber orchestra
Stuart Macrae Boreraig
The second part of the concert can be heard next Saturday.

Donizetti's first major international operatic success - and yet his 30th opera - is heard in a performance recorded last year at the Munich Opera. The two-act work, revived this century by Maria Callas , tells the tragic tale of Henry VIII 's second wife
Anne Boleyn , who in this version of her life is portrayed as an innocent heroine driven to her death by an unfeeling husband who no longer loves her. Introduced by Paul Guinery in conversation with Lady Antonia Fraser , author of a book on the wives of Henry VIII. Sung in Italian.
