The Finishing Touch

on BBC Radio 3

Continuing the six-part series of masterclasses. The third programme comes from the Royal College of Music in London, where a chamber choir of college students and their student conductor Kevin Beckett meet to discuss the finer points of choral-singing interpretation and technique with the eminent conductor Paul
Spicer. As well as directing the highly regarded Finzi Singers, Spicer is also a composer, and was a composition pupil of Herbert Howells at the Royal College in the 1970s. It is particularly appropriate therefore that they are working together on Howells' unaccompanied motet Take him, earth, for cherishing. Producer Steve Portnoi
