When Ann West repeats the Lord's Prayer, she cannot bring herself to say: "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us". Her 10-year-old daughter Lesley Ann Downey was one of the children who died at the hands of notorious moors murderers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady in the early 1960s.
Hindley will shortly be told whether she will have to spend the rest of her life behind bars for her part in the murder of five children. In Can We Forgive Myra Hindley? Joan Bakewell asks whether crimes such as Hindley's are so terrible that they can never be forgiven.
Among those Bakewell talks to are Hindley's priest, who believes she has repented and should now be released, and former Home Office minister
David Mellor, who explains that the public demand for retribution will be an important factor in the ultimate decision.
