A stockbroker's widow finds life stripping her of most of her assets, including her memories. A varied selection of madrigals from Monteverdi's Sixth Book are offered in tonight's concert from the Royal Albert Hall in London. Written while the composer was at the court of the Gonzagas in Mantua and published in 1614 in Venice, where he spent the last 30 years of his life, the madrigals reflect his personal and professional crises of that time. Anthony Rooley directs the singers and players of the Consort of Musicke with its sumptuous array of period instruments. "The madrigals from Monteverdi's Sixth Book reflect the heated atmosphere of the Gonzaga court in Mantua and the delight in the erotic side of life, full of colour, vitality and anguish," says Rooley. "The Albert Hall may not seem the most appropriate place for late-night madrigals, but it is a blessed space in terms of the clarity of the acoustic and, in my experience, it is in the quietest moments when the real magic is made." Introduced by James Naughtie. Director Robin Lough
