Olympic Games - and one of the most gruelling and exciting events, the men's marathon, will be the last medal to be decided. The runners set out from Mataro on a journey of 26 miles and 385 yards, and over two hours later they will arrive at a packed Montjuic Stadium to a heroes' welcome from the 65,000 spectators. This race should be a better organised affair than the 1904 marathon, which was run on dusty roads in temperatures of over 90F.
Only 14 of the 32 starters made it round the course, and one of them was disqualified for hitching a ride in a car for 11 miles! The winner, Thomas Hicks , an English-born brass worker from Massachusetts, only made it to the finishing tape because his handlers gave him a dose of strychnine and brandy ten miles from the end. Britain's 1992 trio of Paul Davis-Hale
, Steve Brace and Dave Long will each dream of being the first British winner, but even matching
Charlie Spedding 's 1984 bronze medal would be a great achievement.
