The final day of the track and field competition, and nine gold medals are up for grabs. In the men's javelin, Steve Backley will be hoping to become the first British man to win an Olympic field event since Lynn Davies won the long jump in Tokyo in 1964. Backley, the European and Commonwealth champion, has been trading world records with his great rival, the Czech Jan Zelezny over the last few years. Zelezny won a silver in Seoul, but this will be Backley's first Olympic competition, and an opportunity for them both to erase memories of poor performances in the world championships, where they both failed to qualify for the final. Backley's team-mate, training and golf partner Mick Hill should have made it through to the final, too.
The British men's sprint relay squad, led by Linford Christie will also have medal hopes, though the French team fancy their chances, and the Americans have four men capable of a sub-ten second 100m. But it's the men's 4 x 400m where British hopes will be highest as the 1991 world champions Kriss Akabusi, John Regis, Derek Redmond and Roger Black renew their battle against the powerful US team. With commentary by David Coleman, Paul Dickenson, Brendan Foster and Stuart Storey.

A review of this evening's nine finals in the Montjuic Stadium. It promised to be a great night for Britain with the men's
4 x 400m relay team, javelin thrower Steve Backley , and Linford Christie 's 4 x 100m quartet all in with good medal chances. The rest of the finals include the women's high jump, the women's relays, the men's 5,000m and the blue-riband events, the men's and women's 1500m. With Peter Elliot sidelined through injury, will tonight see the first Olympic men's 1500m without a British medal since David Moorcroft finished tenth in 1980? Hockey
Coverage of the men's final.
Four years ago, Britain's men clinched a memorable Olympic title with a thrilling win over West Germany. The British squad still includes six men who won gold medals in Seoul (Clift, Martin, Kerly, Batchelor, Potter and Garcia), plus younger talents such as penalty striker specialist Rob Hill, the 22-year-old forward Justin Lee and Slough teenager Simon Nicklin. Did they reach today's final?
World champions Holland, the European Cup holders Germany and Australia were the other strong contenders. Commentary by Barry Davies ,

Leeds United v Liverpool At 10.00pm*. highlights of this afternoon's Charity Shield clash between 1992 League champions Leeds United and FA Cup winners Liverpool, at Wembley. The last time these two sides met in this contest wasinl974-a match of little charity in which Kevin Keegan and Billy Bremner were sent off and suspended for fighting and then removing their shirts before reaching the tunnel.
That gave Keegan the dubious honour of being the first
Englishman to be sent off at
