The final day of the track and field competition, and nine gold medals are up for grabs. In the men's javelin, Steve Backley will be hoping to become the first British man to win an Olympic field event since Lynn Davies won the long jump in Tokyo in 1964. Backley, the European and Commonwealth champion, has been trading world records with his great rival, the Czech Jan Zelezny over the last few years. Zelezny won a silver in Seoul, but this will be Backley's first Olympic competition, and an opportunity for them both to erase memories of poor performances in the world championships, where they both failed to qualify for the final. Backley's team-mate, training and golf partner Mick Hill should have made it through to the final, too.
The British men's sprint relay squad, led by Linford Christie will also have medal hopes, though the French team fancy their chances, and the Americans have four men capable of a sub-ten second 100m. But it's the men's 4 x 400m where British hopes will be highest as the 1991 world champions Kriss Akabusi, John Regis, Derek Redmond and Roger Black renew their battle against the powerful US team. With commentary by David Coleman, Paul Dickenson, Brendan Foster and Stuart Storey.
