A faint whisper of broad wings in the gloom, a flash of talons and the squeak of a rodent clamped in its powerful grasp - this is the traditional image of an owl. But owls are more than things that go pounce in the night. The basic owl design has developed into 130-odd species showing an amazing diversity of size, shape and lifestyle. Some owls stand as tall as a golden eagle, others no bigger than a robin. They feed on rats and insects, fish and frogs - and even other owls. They are found in Arctic pack ice or the Arizona desert, at an international airport, or even in a window box. Their eyes range from orange and golden to deep brown.
