New Zealand won their first
Test in England in 1983, and nine members of that team are back with the intention of repeating their historic victory.
England, rebuilding their team, will need no reminders that India have already achieved the same ambition. PETER WEST introduces the opening overs.

Climber
On only his third climb,
Peter Duncan tries the Old
Man of Stoer. Over 40 metres high, it's shorter than its famous cousin at Hoy, and getting to it involves an icy swim across a channel.
With Everest mountaineer Doug Scott as his guide,
Peter climbs up one of the most difficult and beautiful rocks in Britain that only
20 years ago was considered unclimbable.

In the presence of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
The BBC welcomes you to the XIII Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

For the first time the BBC has produced a 45-minute display as part of the pomp and formality of the Opening Ceremony. It is a display that celebrates Spirit of Youth, symbolised by the 6,500 schoolchildren who promise to make this an entertainment to remember. In song and dance, specially commissioned for the occasion, they bring you a display that is both Scottish in flavour and international. From contemporary dance routines to the strains of a modern orchestra, and the very finest in Scottish Highland dancing to massed Pipes and drums, to country dancing with a fiddle band led by Yehudi Menuhin.

Following this display is the arrival of the teams of the Commonwealth nations competing in the Games, before The Queen's Message is run into Meadowbank Stadium to be read by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who will then declare the XIII Commonwealth Games open.
