The Speaker of the House of Commons is responsible for order in the House. From 1976-83 this was the responsibility of The Rt Hon George Thomas. Befitting his role in Parliament, the Speaker lives 'above the shop' in a palatial residence where he entertains the country's great and famous. The
Speaker is third in order of precedence of all the commoners in the land. It is his personality which must command the respect and obedience of MPs who elect him to see fair play.

Introduced by Rabbi Julia Neuberger Made in Heaven, or Hell on Earth
Marriage, probably the single most important decision most people take in life, is more popular then ever ... and less successful. One in three marriages ends in divorce.
Contraception, feminism and easier divorce have altered attitudes to the institution; monogamy is still the norm but lifetime fidelity is becoming less usual. So why do people get married? What do they expect from the institution? What preparation do we make? Is marriage an indissoluble union or merely a temporarily binding contract. To help answer these and other questions in the Choices studio with Julia Neuberger are Irma Kurtz , author and journalist, Stephen Saunders of the National Marriage Guidance Council and Michele Roberts , poet and novelist.
