The British High Commissioner to Zambia
The first of two films about the life and work of British diplomats overseas. What does a diplomat actually do? What is life like in the Foreign Service? What sort of people are the diplomats?
Next month's Commonwealth Heads-of-Government Conference is to be hosted by President Kaunda of Zambia, and will be preceded by a State Visit from Her
Majesty The Queen. Preparations for these two events are one of the many concerns of the British High Commissioner, Leonard Allinson, and his diplomatic colleagues. So, too, are the problems of Rhodesia, with the border only 70 miles south of Lusaka. There are 20,000 of Joshua Nkomo's men based in Zambia, hence the recent Rhodesian air attacks. There are also 27,000 British people living and working there; many of their problems and worries end up at the British High Commission.
It is the first time that the work of our diplomats overseas has been filmed at such close quarters. Next week we look at the very different tasks and challenges for Our Man in Caracas.
