A Thousand Years of History
Today Her Majesty The Queen, in her capacity as Lord of Man, presided over the ancient Court of Tynwald, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

When the Vikings settled on the Isle of Man they set up a 'Parliament Field' or in Norse, 'Thing-Vollr' or 'Tynwald'. The Manx Parliament is directly derived from this Assembly and legislates for the Island. The Acts of Tynwald which have been given the Royal Assent in the previous year are proclaimed to the people at the open-air assembly on Tynwald Hill at St John's.

But not all is routine, as the people of the island have the traditional right to present their grievances at this assembly, and sometimes they do!
