The Champion, the Czech-born American Martina Navratilova , opens the defence of her title on the Centre Court. Her greatest threat is likely to come from the girl she beat in the final last year, the newly married Chris Evert -Lloyd. The American, who has been in four of the last six finals, will be determined to win her third Championship; while young Tracy Austin has already beaten all the top players. The presence of the popular Evonne Cawley is sure to please her many Wimbledon followers. The delightful Australian won the title eight years ago as Miss Goolagong, and has been a losing finalist three times since. British hopes rest mainly with the Centenary champion, Virginia Wade , and Sue Barker , who reached the semi-finals two years ago.
