All but a handful of our top stars find it difficult to keep their heads above water financially, and their only hope of rescue lies in the hands of commercial sponsors.
Inevitably there have been angry accusations of ' 'shamateurism', not only in Britain but internationally. HRH Prince Philip gives his views on the situation. He is President of the International Equestrian Federation. which controls the whole of the horse world, and he anticipates the difficulties facing the sport after 1980's Olympic Games in Moscow. To bring you the inside story we have followed the fortunes of: Ted Edgar , the hunting farmer with 20 years' experience of winning; Marion Mould , the Olympic silver medallist; Malcolm Pyrah , member of the winning World Cup team; and Sally Mapleson , one of our young Olympic hopefuls. Also taking part are the sponsors, the promoters, the governing body, the British Show Jumping Association, and our top rider, who still claims that he is ' paying to entertain the champion David Broome.

The ninth of ten programmes about practical ways of improving race relations.
Great Expectations
Black parents have high expectations of their children - expectations which aren't always met when the children go to school. What can be done by the schools to help black teenagers reach high levels of achievement? And how far does this demand changes in the curriculum or in the relationships between teachers and students, and schools and parents? This programme looks at two London schools which are coming up with effective answers to these questions.
