In using that biblical quotation at the outset of the Allied air offensive against Germany Air Marshal ' Bomber ' Harris was to be proved correct.
Since the war the military effectiveness of bombing towns and cities has been questioned, nevertheless during World War II 158,564 Allied airmen died in action against Germany. By far the largest percentage of the losses were the men of RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF 8th Airforce. The Americans bombed by day and the RAF by night. Even though cloaked by darkness Lancasters and Halifaxes suffered severe losses - up to 97 four-engine bombers during a single night. American B17 Fortresses and B24 Liberators flew by day in compact formations, relying for defence on massive firepower, yet they too suffered; losing as many as 69 aircraft on a single raid.
Tonight's programme graphically shows in rare wartime colour footage just what those ' maximum effort' raids were like for the young men who flew on them. Survivors from the crews of two bombers, an RAF Lancaster, V Victor' and an American B17 named ' Memphis Belle', look back across 35 years to their experience in the air war over Germany.
