The series continues with three new documentaries on men who rose to the challenge of high command in the Far East during World War II.

This film tells the story of the man who planned the surprise attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941 and thus forced America into the war. It explores the dilemma of someone brought up in a tradition very different from the European and American commanders. Yamamoto was a true Samurai - 'I am the sword of my Emperor'; yet he was a life-long admirer of America; he was also a compulsive gambler. Yamamoto strongly opposed Japan's foreign policy in the 1930s but it became his fate, as Commander in Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy, to plan a war that he knew Japan could never win.
Those taking part include Yamamoto's son, many of his Japanese colleagues and two of the Americans who played key roles in the extraordinary operation to ambush and destroy him in 1943.
Narrated by Frank Gillard.
